MUSICIANSHIP STUDIES (MUSC)

MUSC 121 - MUSICIANSHIP I, WRITTEN/AURAL

Introduction of foundational skills in musicianship with an emphasis on written music theory and aural skill acquisition, including written notation, ear training, and sight singing, and analysis and construction of triads and seventh chords. This course will combine analysis, performance, and composition to provide students with the fundamentals needed for successful careers in music.

Course Notes: Placement requires diagnostic testing or completion of THAR 100.

MUSC 122 - MUSICIANSHIP II, WRITTEN/AURAL

Aural skills and written analysis, including roman numeral analysis, harmonic progressions, cadences, phrase structure, form, and modulations. Continued development of ear training and sight singing.

Prerequisites: MUSC 121

Course Notes: Prerequisite for this class is MUSC 121 or placement by diagnostic testing.

MUSC 123 - KEYBOARD MUSICIANSHIP I

Introduction to piano keyboard skills including major and minor 5-finger patterns, major scales, primary diatonic chords, major chord progressions. Introduction to accompaniment styles and sight reading.

MUSC 124 - KEYBOARD MUSICIANSHIP II

Continuation of developing piano keyboard skills including minor scales, arpeggios, chord progression ii-V-I, classical and popular accompaniment styles, sight reading.

MUSC 221 - MUSICIANSHIP III WRITTEN/AURAL

Developing skills in part writing, voice leading, texture, species counterpoint. Exploration of form and chromaticism, including modal mixture and artificial scales. Continued development of ear training and sight singing.

MUSC 222 - MUSICIANSHIP IV WRITTEN/AURAL JAZZ

Studies of advanced harmonic structures, scale forms, and chord progressions in jazz and contemporary music.

Course Notes: No additional credit granted for MUSC 222A or MUSC 222B

MUSC 223 - KEYBOARD MUSICIANSHIP III

Further development of piano keyboard skills including major and minor chord progressions and cadences, accompaniment styles, choral and instrumental score reading, transposition, sight reading.

MUSC 224 - MUSICIANSHIP IV: JAZZ PIANO

Rootless chord voicings applied to major and minor ii V I; chromatic embellishment of static harmony; voicing 7sus4 chords; “So What” and quartal voicings; idiomatic keyboard vamps; transcribed piano pieces.

MUSC 312 - SPECIAL TOPICS: INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINAR

This seminar engages performance majors from across disciplines in the exploration of selected topics that bridge artistic, cultural, and scholarly perspectives. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary dialogue, critical inquiry, and the integration of diverse performance practices. Course content varies by semester according to the instructor’s area of focus and may include readings, discussions, presentations, and creative or research-based projects.
