Masters Concentrations
Offered in: Chicago
Concentrations that reflect the interdisciplinarity of 21st-century music careers are available for students enrolled in the Master of Music degree. Concentrations combine the personal interests of students and the relation of the Concentration’s focus to the relevant job market or anticipated further educational pursuits. They enable graduate students to take additional coursework devoted to specific career interests, broaden professional networks before graduation, and cultivate a more relevant resume for further graduate study and/or job opportunities. More broadly speaking, Concentrations have the potential to formally cultivate the pursuit of an artistically diverse and multi-faceted music career.
Students may pursue concentrations in Arts Administration or Music History/Theory and will take 9 additional credits beyond the requirements for the MM degree. For most degree plans, Concentration requirements can be completed during the two-year residency of the MM degree, within the normal course load if the concentration is declared by the beginning of the second semester. Concentrations, however, can also be completed with an additional semester or through the summer. Individual mentoring by a faculty member in the student’s area of interest is a fundamental feature of the concentration option.

MUSICOLOGY/THEORY CONCENTRATION (9 CREDITS)
The Musicology/Theory (M/T) Concentration can be completed in various ways. It can be fulfilled by taking three 3-credit MAS courses, or two MAS courses and a 3-credit independent study. The capstone project is a focused thesis paper or other written deliverable(s).
The thesis or written deliverable can be also satisfied in a number of ways: (1) through an independent thesis study for 3 credits, (2) with more substantial presentations and/or research papers in each of three MAS courses totaling 9 credits, or (3) by completing an Office of Student Research (OSR) Fellowship.
Musicology/Theory Concentration students are encouraged to apply for an OSR Fellowship. If selected for the fellowship, students can forgo the independent study and instead take three additional MAS courses without more substantial deliverables. Students following the independent study route take two MAS courses without more substantial deliverables and an independent study.
Option A:
9 Credits of MAS Coursework (excluding MAS 401 STYLE AND LITERATURE )
Each course requires Concentration students to submit to the faculty mentor a more substantial deliverable than what is prescribed in the syllabus. In most MAS courses, a research paper of 20-30 pages in length and a 20 minute presentation in the course satisfies this additional requirement.
Public Presentation of Findings from one of the MAS Courses
Student must write a 250-word abstract for the presentation.
Option B:
6 Credits of MAS Coursework
3 Credits of an Independent Study Thesis Project
Project advised by CCPA Faculty
Deliverable: Audio/written Paper revealing original thought/conclusions
Public Presentation of Findings (including a 250-word abstract)
Option C:
9 Credits of MAS Coursework plus Completed Office of Student Research Fellowship
OSR Fellowship includes mentoring, a deliverable, and public presentation of findings (including a 250-word abstract for the presentation)
