The Bilingual/ESL Education minor prepares future educators to improve student learning with children and families who have a first language other than English. The minor leads to the addition of a bilingual and/or ESL endorsement on an Illinois Professional Educator License for candidates for teacher licensure.

To earn the bilingual endorsement, teacher candidates must pass a state language exam and successfully complete the courses in the minor. Visit the Illinois Licensure website http://www.icts.nesinc.com/  (Target Language Proficiency assessment) for more information.

To earn a state endorsement, students also must complete 100 clinical hours in bilingual or ESL classroom settings.

Requirements

Six courses in Education (18 credit hours) make up the minor. All courses are required (see below). Note: EDUC 201 is not required if already completed for another degree.

At least four of the courses, or 12 credit hours, must be taken at Roosevelt University. All courses must be passed with grades of C- or higher and a minimum 2.0 overall GPA.
