This course meets every week to discuss composition-related topics. The class activities comprise listening, discussion, presentations, invited guest lecturers and performers, and preparation of collaborative works.

MCMP 315 - SENIOR COMPOSITION RECITAL

Capstone public presentation of original compositions demonstrating artistic growth, technical proficiency, and creative voice. Students prepare and produce a recital of works composed during their course of study, collaborating with performers as appropriate. The project reflects mastery of compositional craft, effective rehearsal and production practices, and readiness for professional or graduate-level work. Faculty supervision guides the development, preparation, and presentation of the recital.

Course Notes: Required of composition majors in the senior year. MCMP 314 must be taken concurrently. The recital must include at least 40 minutes of music representative of the student’s work and approved by the primary composition instructor. Recital date and production details are subject to faculty approval.

MCMP 325 - GAME THEORY AND APPLICATIONS

This course is designed to help individual musicians to learn music composition in its beginning stages; smaller forms of composition, emphasizing motivic transformation, rhythmic organization, and structural principles. Students will develop a familiarity with various instruments and learn how to compose an effective piece with a limited amount of musical material. Students will complete three composition projects and three listening assignments.
