MAS 301 - HONORS BMA COLLOQUIUM

Discussion of seminal literature and emerging issues in the various music-related disciplines (ethnomusicology, musicology, music theory, music therapy, music production, arts administration, intellectual property law, music librarianship, etc.), in order to gain exposure to the work of individuals in these areas. Discussion of current news and topics in music, the performing arts, and related fields. Consideration of music and cultural engagement as essential elements in human society, and the potential for music and the arts to champion the cause of social justice. Time allowed for conversations with on-campus guests and visits to professionals working in the Chicago area.

MAS 310 - INTERDISCIPLINARY PERFORMING ARTS FORUM

This Forum connects students across the BA, BMA (non-honors), and AEMB programs with professional practices in music and allied arts fields. Through frequent guest presenters—ranging from music production and arts administration to entrepreneurship—students gain direct exposure to diverse career pathways. The course also serves as a space for students to share creative, administrative, and internship-related work, fostering mentorship and collaboration across year levels. In addition, the Forum provides targeted internship preparation, including skill identification, interview practice, CV and cover letter development, internship preference mapping, and direct contact with RU Career Services and prospective internship partners.

Course Notes: BA, BMA (non-honors), and AEMB students complete this Forum three times (3 credits total) across their four-year degree degree path. Offered every fall, the course is required in the first semester of study, after which students select two additional fall terms that best align with their academic and professional goals.

MAS 311 - INTERDISCIPLINARY PERFORMING ARTS FORUM

This forum for BA, AEMB, and BMA-Interdisciplinary Music Industry students explores innovations and professional trends across today’s music industry. Emphasis is placed on production, administration, entrepreneurship, and intersections between music and related disciplines. Through discussion, collaborative projects, and guest speakers, students gain insight into diverse career paths and current practices. The course includes opportunities for production and administrative work and prepares students for internships connected to ARTL 360.

MAS 360 - INTERNSHIP IN PERFORMING ARTS

This course complements off-site internship work for a performing arts organization with self-reflection, discussion, assessment, and further exploration of work experiences beyond those found in curricula. Assignments and discussions will contextualize the role of the individual within an arts organization, heighten the student’s understanding of the industry and structures, and provide tools for self-reflection and professional development. Students may register for 1-3 credits.

Prerequisites: MAS 301

Course Notes: The student is responsible for securing an internship p position with an approved organization. Minimum of 5 hours/week with the organization (total hours for the semester 120-240). Work location (on-site/off-site) must be approved by the instructor.
