The BFA in Musical Theatre is a pre-professional degree program designed to develop a solid foundation in the skills required for a career as a musical theatre performer, with particular focus on vocal performance and acting technique.  The program is grounded in musicianship and storytelling, providing intensive training in music theory, piano skills, and weekly voice lessons along with a high level of acting coursework in Stanislavski-based scene study classes, Shakespeare and heightened text and many other styles.  Students also receive extensive training in ballet, jazz, tap and musical theatre dance styles.  In addition to performing in our productions at CCPA, Musical Theatre majors have gotten experience as swings and understudies while still in school at some of the Chicago area’s best theatres, including Porchlight Theatre, Drury Lane, Marriott Lincolnshire, Writers Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, and more.

Admission requirements

Students interested in the Musical Theatre major should already have a strong background in vocal performance and acting.  Dance experience is a plus but not required.

Residency Requirement

A student must complete at least 60 credit hours at Roosevelt University.

Grade Requirements

A student must earn at least C- in all Theatre Conservatory coursework and maintain a GPA of 3.0 in all courses in their major subject area.

Theatre Electives should be chosen in consultation with the Program Director and Academic Advisor, and may not include TVOI applied lessons.
