MCMP 400 - COMPOSITION SEMINAR
This course meets every week to discuss composition-related topics. The class activities comprise listening, discussion, presentations, invited guest lecturers and performers, and preparation of collaborative works.

MCMP 401 - SUMMER COMPOSITION INSTITUTE
The Summer Composition Institute offers an opportunity for young composers to write both acoustic and electro-acoustic music. The program includes private lessons with composition faculty, lectures on various topics from form/analysis to electro-acoustic music technique, seminars on professional development and professionalism for musicians, reading sessions with faculty musicians, and performances of student works.

MCMP 415 - GRADUATE COMPOSITION JURY
Juried presentation submitted to the composition faculty consisting of: curriculum vitae of all composition activities undertaken during CCPA master’s residency, including a worklist; scores and recordings as appropriate for all acoustic and electroacoustic works written during master’s residency; self-assessment of development of compositional technique during master’s residency, evidence of synthesis, and the emergence of a personal voice. The minimum passing grade is B-. Corequisites: MCMP 414 and MCMP 416.

MCMP 416 - GRADUATE COMPOSITION RECITAL
Public presentation of at least 30 minutes of two or more original acoustic, electroacoustic, or mixed media works written during master’s residency. Program notes must be supplied for each work on the program. Composers will be assessed on the effectiveness of communication and rehearsal process as reflected in the actual performance; quality of organizational, artistic, and production decisions; demonstration of level of growth. The minimum passing grade is B-. Corequisites: MCMP 414 and MCMP 415.

MCMP 425 - COMPOSING: ART AND PROCESS
This course is designed to help individual musicians to learn music composition in its beginning stages; smaller forms of composition, emphasizing motivic transformation, rhythmic organization, and structural principles. Students will develop a familiarity with various instruments and learn how to compose an effective piece with a limited amount of musical material. Students will complete three composition projects and three listening assignments.

MCMP 490 - THESIS
Completion of an original work of significant proportions (a 15-20 minute work for electroacoustic media or a large chamber ensemble of 10-15 performers; or a 10-12 minute work for orchestra or wind ensemble). Includes 25-minute public presentation for the Composition Seminar focusing on the thesis project. The minimum passing grade is B-.
