The Spanish for Healthcare Professionals Certificate Program trains students in Spanish language skills geared specifically to the health professions. The four-course program will provide students with the linguistic and cultural competencies necessary to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients with limited proficiency in English. Covering pertinent grammar and vocabulary relevant to health care situations, the program will also introduce students to sociocultural issues specific to Hispanic populations. Its online format makes it accessible to students and working professionals in geographically diverse regions.

 Professional Competencies:

1. Develop sufficient linguistic skills to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking patients. While speaking and comprehension skills will be especially emphasized, students will also learn to read and write in Spanish.

2. Acquire cultural knowledge about Hispanic communities and awareness of the socio-cultural factors which impact the health of Hispanic populations.

3. Gain the skills and knowledge which enable healthcare professionals to respectfully interact with Hispanic patients.

All courses for the certificate must be completed with a minimum grade of B- and a cumulative GPA of 3.0
