Exploration of essential concepts of style, criticism, analysis, and interpretation, by engaging with a wide range of topics approached through diverse perspectives. Development and presentation of interpretive analytical strategies; written analytical and interpretive reflections both on published scholarship and self-designed musical topics.

MAS 461 - SCHENKERIAN ANALYSIS

The study and application of analytical techniques of tonal music as taught by Heinrich Schenker and their implications in modern practices of music analysis. Students will gain fluency in Schenkerian terminology, learn to read and create voice-leading graphs, as well as critique Schenkerian analyses of music of the so-called common practice era and debate the relevance of reductive analysis to performance. Students will also become familiar with critical evaluation of Schenker’s writings and influence by modern scholars and will seek to evaluate the positive and negative aspects of his theories on music analysis instruction and on the musical community at large.
